Boston Marathon 2018

There may never be another “normal” Boston Marathon again, not after the 2013 bombings at the finish line, and this year’s version, when around 30,000 runners step to the starting line, will be no exception.

This year’s race on Monday morning, Patriots Day in Massachusetts, will be especially somber, marking the fifth anniversary of the bombings, a milestone of survival of one type or another, five years of taking one step followed by another for all the runners.

The race will begin at 8:40 a.m. Eastern time in Hopkinton, Mass., and will end at the Boylston Street finish line where the bombings occurred in Boston, with the usual Red Sox game going on at Fenway Park.

Prize money: The total prize money distributed among the top finishers of the 121st Boston Marathon will be $830,500, plus an additional $220,000 if records are broken in the open, masters, or push rim wheelchair divisions.

The man who captured the explosions looks back

Five years later, Steve Silva recalled being at the finish line and shooting video of the explosions that was shared globally. “It wasn’t a bone-rattling explosion like you might imagine — more of a muffled thud with a large plume of smoke that ran straight up the mid-level buildings on that block of Boylston,” Silva writes.

Top runners include a strong American women’s field

The women’s field includes five of the all-time fastest marathoners in the U.S.: Shalane Flanagan, the 2017 New York City Marathon champion; Desiree Linden, a two-time Olympian; Jordan Hasay, who placed third in Boston and Chicago last year; 45-year-old Deena Kastor, holder of the American record in the marathon; and Molly Huddle, the American record holder in the 10,000-meter and half-marathon. Last year’s champion, Edna Kiplagat of Kenya, also returns.

When New England residents wake up on April 16, they may have two things on their mind: The Boston Bruins on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the NHL Playoffs and how Brian Johnson will do starting for the Boston Red Sox against the Baltimore Orioles.

However, they should also remember that, starting at 8:40 a.m., the 122nd Boston Marathon will be taking place.

The marathon started in 1897 and hosts runners from all over the world to compete in a 26.2-mile affair that begins in the town of Hopkinton, MA, and continues all the way to Boston and near the John Hancock Tower at Copley Square.
